As expected, we saw a number of trailers air during the Super Bowl. We got some first footage (Solo) as well as new looks (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom). Here is a round up of some of what we saw, along with a rating of my personal interest level, for whatever that’s worth to you.
Movies
Solo: A Star Wars Story
Interest level: 7/10; I like the Star Wars series just fine. It’s the fact that it’s a prequel that holds it back a bit for me. No matter what kind of danger the main characters get themselves into in a prequel, you know they’re coming out of it okay. That’s always my biggest issue with prequels. But I’d still expect this to be a good movie.
Avengers: Infinity War
Interest level: 15/10; This is probably the most excited I’ve ever been for a movie in my life. May 4th cannot come soon enough. And the fact that it’s released on my birthday weekend makes it just that much better.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
Interest level: 8/10; The first Jurassic World was great and it doesn’t look like the series is slowing down. While the first trailer made it seem like another action adventure monster movie, this one gave off more of a thriller, maybe even a horror, feel. And I was digging it. I’ll be very curious to see how the final cut turns out in terms of tone. But I like the direction it appears to be going.
Mission Impossible: Fallout
Interest level: 6.5/10; I’d have to go back and rewatch all the previous MI films, but I’m assuming we’ll be getting more of the same: some good dumb fun at the movies. It will have a couple over-the-top stunts, some great action sequences, and an okay plot that can be somewhat overlooked by the previous two points.
The Cloverfield Paradox
Interest level: 2/10; I haven’t seen either of the other two Cloverfield movies so this doesn’t really hold any interest. But I’ll say the premise, though another prequel, does at least seem intriguing.
Skyscraper
Interest level: 6/10; This looks like it will be very similar the Fast & the Furious movies, which should make it a fun movie, if nothing else. It will be lacking in plot with than stellar writing and acting. But hopefully they’ll lean into that and really just go for the ridiculous factor.
A Quiet Place
Interest level: 4/10; I’m not usually one for horror movies but I just might have to give this one a chance. The fact that there will apparently be little to no speaking is really piquing my interest. I’m very curious to see how it turns out with the actors having to rely on other, less traditional acting choices.
Red Sparrow
Interest level: 7/10; I’m a big Jennifer Lawrence fan and I typically like spy movies. Good combination, not much else to say.
TV
Castle Rock
Interest level: 5/10; I don’t really know what this one is about but it looks intense. A Stephen King adaptation could go either way. I’m assuming I’ll give this one a chance once it comes out.
Jack Ryan
Interest level: 8/10; I love John Krasinski but I haven’t seen any of his work outside of The Office. I’m excited to see what he can do with this kind of role. The trailer definitely looks promising.
Westworld
Interest level: 15/10; Even with just one season, Westworld is already an easy top 10 show for me, if not higher. If the rest of the series is even close to as good as the first season, this could end up being a top 2 or 3 all time show, though not sure it could ever pass Game of Thrones. I’ve got to get my Season 1 rewatch started soon.
