The big entertainment news of the day is Fox’s decision to sell media assets to Disney for $52.4 billion. There are of course lots of reverberating effects from this deal. But the part I’m most excited about is what it could mean for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) moving forward. This post on Variety provides some more detailed information about the deal.
Before this deal, Fox held the rights to X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool. Fox has made a number of successful X-Men movies and we all know how popular the Ryan Reynolds Deadpool movie was. But the Fantastic Four has struggled mightily to find just that right formula for a good, heck, average movie. The MCU has resulted in very few duds, meaning fans are likely to get excited over the prospect of a Marvel-produced Fantastic Four movie. While I’m on board for another attempt at the Fantastic Four, I’m most excited for what it could mean for the future of Deadpool. Just imagine him interacting with the Avengers? Thor and Deadpool? Deadpool reacting to seeing Hulk for the first time? I’m getting giddy just thinking about the possibilities. This article on Rotten Tomatoes goes into a bit further detail on what we could be in store for with the revised MCU.
It should come as no surprise that there is no word so far on when new movies will start production. Marvel already has multiple movies planned going into at least 2020, so it’s unclear where the newly acquired properties would fit in. But with the way Marvel Studios has been operating, I’m sure they will find a sure-fire path to success.
