For the rankings themselves, go here. This page is just to offer some additional information, for those that might be interested. Rating method, what the different scores mean, things like that.
A few notes:
- Ratings are meant to be based off quality of the film, not how much I liked it (objective vs. subjective).
- That being said, if a movie is technically proficient but utterly boring, that will be reflected in its rating. To me, enjoyment/entertainment is a part of a film’s overall quality.
- On the flip side, if a movie is terrible but enjoyable (“so bad it’s good”), it may earn a few extra points.
- While not always the case, I’m usually easier on comedies.
- Did you laugh? Yes? Then it’s probably a good comedy.
- But that only counts to a certain extent; to get a really good rating, it has to be a great overall film, it can’t rely solely on hitting its jokes.
- My scores do not correlate exactly to the letter grade scale
- See table below for an approximation of what letter grade my scores would be
- In general, a score somewhere around a 60 would be “perfectly average.”
How do I determine a movie’s rating?
It’s pretty simple, actually. I come up with an initial rating – based mostly off a gut feeling – and look at the other movies around that same score. Then I adjust if needed. I don’t use any sort of formula, I just kind of “go with it.” It’s worked pretty well so far.
