Fanny Wadling has defeated Forever Toppin to win the 2019 Women’s College Basketball Tournament of Names. What began as a one-week final voting period turned into two weeks, as the vote was initially too close to call. This result comes as a bit of a surprise, with favorites Cali Weed and Treasure Hunt getting knocked out before the championship round. Wadling gained a lot of momentum on her way to the title, and this is certainly a hard earned win in such a strong field.
With Wadling’s victory, this is now two consecutive years that the winner of the Tournament of Names has also played in the actual NCAA Tournament. Fanny’s Maine squad lost in the first round to NC State, and she put up a very respectable line of 9 points, 8 rebounds, and 1 assist. In 2018, Leroy Butts IV played 10 minutes for Radford in two tournament games, winning in the play-in round and then losing in the first round to eventual champion, Villanova.
