EW – If you want to bid farewell to New Girl, save seven Tuesdays in a row starting in April.
Fox announced on Thursday that it will uncork the season 7 premiere of the Zooey Deschanel sitcom on April 10 at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT, while the two-part, one-hour series finale will air on May 15 at 9 p.m.
If you don’t remember how season six ended, here’s a quick refresher. Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Nick (Jake Johnson) had just gotten back together, Cece (Hannah Simone) and Schmidt (Max Greenfield) found out Cece was pregnant, and Winston (Lamorne Morris) and Aly (Nasim Pedrad) got engaged. Fox also confirmed the rumored time jump for the final season, which will take place three years in the future. The Entertainment Weekly article adds some further plot information in that regard.
In the future, Jess and Nick, still together, return from a European book tour, Schmidt is staying at home with daughter Ruth while CeCe is a working mom, and the now-married Winston and Aly are expecting a child.
New Girl is one my favorite sitcoms so of course I’m excited for it to return for one last ride. However, I am a bit hesitant about the time jump aspect. It’s a tough act to pull off and, being the final season, I hope it doesn’t end, leaving us with a sour taste as the final reaction. But New Girl has yet to disappoint so I see no reason why they won’t produce killer episodes for one last stretch. I also like the positions some of the characters are in to start the season. It should set the up for some great storylines and the potential to produce many more of its classic moments.
Nick is now a successful author, after never having experienced much in the way of real success before. With Nick seemingly getting his life together, Jess no longer needs to help him along in life, something she has done consistently throughout the show’s run. Schmidt has become a stay-at-home dad, completely switching gears from someone to whom his job held extreme importance. But I’m probably most excited for Winston. He and Aly make a great couple who have already had many hilarious moments together. Seeing Winston trying (and often failing?) to comfort his now-pregnant wife should all but guarantee at least a couple all time Winston scenes.
