According to ESPN, the Marlins and Yankees have agreed in principle to a trade that would send reigning NL MVP Giancarlo Stanton to New York. In return, the Marlins will receive Starlin Castro and prospects Jorge Guzman and Jose Devers. As a result the Yankees lineup next season will feature the only two players who hit 50+ home runs last year. Stanton led the majors with 59 home runs and outfielder Aaron Judge led the AL with 52. That’s a fearsome twosome in the middle of an already excellent lineup.
As a baseball fan who doesn’t live in New York, I of course hate the Yankees. And as a Twins fan who has seen the Twins lose seemingly every single game ever against the Yankees, I hate the Yankees even more. Though to be fair, I can’t even imagine how Red Sox fans are feeling today. While nothing is a given, it certainly seems like the Yankees should have a top-tier offense (again) in 2018. The silver lining here might be that 2017 very well could be the best we ever see from Stanton. It was a career year, highlighted by the fact that he was named the NL MVP even with the Marlins ending the season nowhere near the playoffs. But even with a regression to the mean, the Stanton-Judge combo is nevertheless a formidable duo. The rest of the American League better be ready.
