I’ve Decided To Compile A Comprehensive Ranking List Of Every Movie I Watch – Here’s What I Have So Far

If you’ve been following this site, or me, at all, you know by now that I’m a big movie guy. Huuuuge movie guy. When I was working on my Oscars preview, I was doing a lot of rankings of the nominees to help me sort through my choices. Once I had seen all the movies, I just kept watching new movies. I was on a big movie kick. Normally I’ll binge watch a bunch of TV shows and mix in a movie here and there. But I was just in a movie mood and it’s still rolling. When I was watching new movies, I kept thinking of them in comparison to the Oscar-nominated movies I had just recently watched, so I started ranking those to see where they fell there. Then I just kept going. I’ve thought a number of times about trying to come up with a comprehensive ranking list of all the movies I’ve seen. But it also seemed like too daunting of a task. So I’m starting from scratch. The only movies on the list are those that I have watched since the beginning of 2018. I’ll just keep adding to it as I go along.

There are a couple of disclaimers. It’s far from complete, and there are tons of great movies missing. For example, as you’ll see, Black Panther, is currently the highest rated movie on my list. But of course that isn’t the best movie ever made. It’s simply the best movie I’ve watched since I started the list. I can think of a number of movies better than that but I need to watch them again before I can put them on the list.

The current list is very Marvel-loaded. I wanted to rewatch every MCU movie before Infinity War comes out, which I accomplished much earlier than originally planned. It’s also very top-heavy, as I’ve so far made a concerted effort to rewatch movies I know I like or to watch well-liked movies that I had not yet seen.

I am also keeping a secondary list of ranks within specific genres. To make it simple, I’m assigning each movie only one genre. And I’m trying to keep the genres simple as well. So far I’ve come up with: Action, Animated, Comedy, Crime Drama, Drama, Sci-Fi, and Thriller. More will be added if/when necessary.

So far I have 57 movies on the list The top 5, in order (rated 1-100):

  • Black Panther – 92
  • Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri – 90
  • Thor: Ragnarok – 90
  • The Big Sick – 90
  • Captain America: Winter Solider – 90

And the current bottom five (actually 7 movies but there are three that are tied for the 5th lowest ranking):

  • The Shape of Water – 25
  • The Circle – 30
  • Passengers – 35
  • Nocturnal Animals – 40
  • The Incredible Hulk – 50
  • Den of Thieves – 50
  • Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – 50

I’d like to say these rankings are set in stone, but if I’m being honest, I know they won’t be. I decide on a rating for each movie as soon as it’s done. If I see what else it’s rated around, I may change one or more at the moment if something doesn’t feel right.

I’ll provide updates on the rankings periodically, after I’ve added a bunch of movies or if there is a notable movie added to it.

P.S. I will also be doing a ranking of all the James Bond movies, leading up to Bond  25’s release next year. Each will be given two separate, unique ratings: one against all other movies, and one only against the rest of the Bond series. So in theory, whatever the best Bond movie is would have a 100 rating for the Bond series and the other rating when compared to other movies. But more will follow on this whenever I start rewatching the series.
