Quick summary of a report from USA Today:
- Our hero, Alberto Saavedra Lopez, quits his job at Bank of America in 2016
- Bank of America files theft report with police, accusing Lopez of stealing roughly $5,000 from the branch between July and September 2016
- Lopez moves to Phoenix and manages to evade police for over a year
- In December 2017 Lopez applies for a job as a dispatcher with the Cottonwood (AZ) Police Department
- The CPD (obviously) runs a background check and his arrest warrant pops up
- CPD schedules an interview with Lopez in order to arrest him
- Lopez shows up for the interview and is immediately arrested
Um…what? Of course the guy needed to pay for his crimes, but come on man. You avoid the police for a full year and then you walk right into the lion’s den? This has to rank right up there with dumbest moves ever by a criminal. Did he honestly think a police department would not run a background check? As far as I know, arrest warrants don’t expire which meant there was no way it wouldn’t come up.
But as dumb as this was, I have to thank the guy. I haven’t come across a good “dumb criminal” story like this in a while, so it’s nice to get another one in the pipeline. And there’s always this silver lining: Any dumb decision you make will still be topped by this one. That’s got to count for something, right?
