This one will be nice and short and sweet. A wildly entertaining movie, there just isn’t a whole lot to say about Deadpool 2.
Okay, first thing’s first. If you didn’t like the first Deadpool, you can stop reading right now. Deadpool 2 is more of the same. And similarly, if you enjoyed 2016’s Deadpool, you will like Deadpool 2.
Ryan Reynolds, as expected, is again fantastic as the titular character. His love for the character is well-known among fans. That love and dedication was apparent in the first one, and it didn’t let up this time around. You can tell how much he’s enjoying playing this character and that carries over into the audience’s enjoyment.
Josh Brolin stars as the time-traveling Cable. And as great as he was in the role, unfortunately the character was a bit underwritten. This was a problem with most of the supporting cast. Case in point: Zazie Beetz, who plays Domino, also gets this treatment. She was a super fun part of the movie and her scenes were a ton of fun. But again, little to no character development. It was a bit of an odd combination. I didn’t think there were any noticeably weak performances, but there just wasn’t enough character development for any of the characters. If there is a Deadpool 3, hopefully any returning characters will get some extra love.
The non-stop wise-cracks; the meta humor; the fourth wall breaking. All major character traits. This is where the movie got a little tiresome. And it wasn’t that there a bunch of jokes that didn’t land. It was just the sheer volume. For the most part, though, it all worked. But at a couple different parts, it just too much. And those parts could be different for any given person. It could be different for me the next time I watch it.
Let’s talk about some other fun bits, end on a positive note. The music in this movie is incredible. They know just the right song to use at all points in the film. This could be something that might be easy to overlook, but the soundtrack adds a lot to the movie. There are also a number of small cameos that are a lot of fun. Try to go in without knowing ahead of time who pops up. It won’t necessarily spoil anything, certainly nothing major with the overall story. But you’ll enjoy them all more if you don’t know who or what to expect. And be sure to stay through the credits. There are five credit scenes and they just might be the funniest parts of the whole movie.
