Most Anticipated Movies For The Rest Of 2018

I already covered the 10 best movies of the year so far which means it’s time to look ahead to the movies still to come. I’m going to limit myself to a top 10, so I’ll be leaving off more than a few highly anticipated movies. But them’s the breaks, I guess. And these 10 won’t necessarily be what I think will be the 10 best movies the rest of the year; just the 10, that for one reason or another, I’m more excited about than others.

10. Holmes and Watson (December 21)

Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as the legendary characters? Yes, please. No footage has been released yet, but there are some set photos. Not much is known about the plot, but Ralph Fiennes is cast as famous Holmes villain Professor Moriarty. I don’t see why this can’t be another Ferrell classic.

9. The Equalizer 2 (July 20th)

If Denzel is in it, I’m seeing it. And if he’s going to be out there dropping fools and kicking ass for two hours? Well that’s just all the better. I don’t expect this to be a great movie, but it should be good enough, as well as one of the more entertaining movies of the year.

8. BlacKkKlansman (August 10th)

A really good trailer and what looks to be a stellar cast. It had a great reception at Cannes, winning the Grand Prix. I know that’s no guarantee but, given the subject matter, there’s no way Spike Lee and Jordan Peele don’t give us one of the best movies of the year.

7. White Boy Rick (September 14th)

Another wild-looking movie based on a true story. At least from the trailer it looks like we’ll be getting another solid performance from McConaughey. If the rest of the cast shows up, we should have a hit on our hands.

6. Aquaman (December 21st)

Wonder Woman (and maybe Justice League) has so far been the only real success of the DCEU. The movies have done alright at the box office, but have not been very well received critically. Jason Mamoa’s Aquaman was one of the better parts of Justice League, so hopefully that will carry over into his standalone film. I’m not sure yet what my expectations are, but I’m a huge superhero movie fan. So I’m always going to be excited when there’s a new one coming out. The first trailer is set to be shown at San Diego Comic-Con on July 21st, which should give us a better feel for the movie.

5. A Star is Born (October 5th)

This one is already generating tons of Oscar buzz, and based on the footage we’ve seen so far, it’s absolutely well within reason. It’s no news that Bradley Cooper is a great actor, but now he can sing too? How unfair (but admittedly awesome) is that? Gaga’s powerful vocals will make this one to catch in theaters if you can. Plus, Dave Chappelle. I always say yes to Dave Chappelle.

4. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (November 16th)

Look, I’m always all in on anything and everything Harry Potter-related. The Dumbledore/Grindelwald story was one I was dying to know more about from the moment I finished reading Deathly Hallows. Once the first Fantastic Beasts showed that was the direction they were headed, I was too pumped.

3. First Man (October 12th)

This is probably the movie I have the most faith in. You have director Damien Chazelle teaming back up with Ryan Gosling, working together just recently in La La Land. You might recall that movie won Chazelle an Oscar for Best Director, while also being nominated for (and briefly winning) Best Picture. Gosling also received a Best Actor nomination for the movie. And the movie Chazelle directed before La La Land? Only Whiplash, another Best Picture nominee. I have no real basis for this other than what I just mentioned, but I’m making First Man, Gosling, and Chazelle my early favorites to win Oscars for Best Picture, Actor, and Director.

2. Mission: Impossible – Fallout (July 27th)

The last two entries in the Mission: Impossible series (Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation) were both great. There’s no reason not believe this will be another hit. And now some early reviews are coming in and they are glowing. I cannot wait to see this one. I mean just watch this trailer and try and tell me you’re not getting hyped.

1. Bad Times at the El Royale (October 12th)

I’ll be honest, if you were to ask me to explain the plot of this movie, I’m not sure what I would say. A bunch of bad people gather at a hotel and do bad things? That’s probably as descriptive as I could get. But you know what? I don’t care. Look at that loaded cast of Chris Hemsworth, Jeff Bridges, Jon Hamm, Dakota Johnson, Nick Offerman, and Russell Crowe and combine that with its crazy trailer? Yeah, there’s no doubt I’m beyond excited for this one.

And there you have it. Of course there are many other movies I’m excited for, but these are the 10 I’ll really be keeping an eye on. With that in mind I’ll let known big-time movie fan (?) Bart Scott explain how I’m feeling about this upcoming slate of movies.
