Player Previews
We’ll have to wait for the draws to be released before being able to provide any sort of deep preview. But there’s still info we can glean from the seeds and listed odds. To no one’s surprise, the oddsmakers see this year’s Wimbledon as a four-man fight between Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, and Zverev. The smart money would be on a Federer-Nadal final, but you never know who find himself fighting through a Murderer’s Row type of draw.
Cilic and del Potro are of course two players to watch out for. I seem to say this at the outset of every Grand Slam, but Dimitrov has all the talent, he just hasn’t been able to put it together outside of two Grand Slam semi-final appearances (Australian Open ’17 and Wimbledon ’14).
Andy Murray is a real wild card. He’s unseeded and coming back from a major injury, yet he’s still listed with the 5th best odds at +900. Murray is probably the player whose draw I’ll be most interested in.
And as always, Nick Kyrgios will be someone to keep an eye on. He has so much natural ability, he should be a perennial top 10 player. It’s been his attitude that’s been holding him back. When he’s on (and focused) he is one of the most fun players to watch.
Lastly, I have to mention my guy Denis Shapovalov. This will be only his second appearance at Wimbledon, losing in the first round in 2017. But he’s made consistently huge strides the last few years. He’s been able to improve his year-end ranking from 1162 in 2015, to 250 in 2016, to 51 in 2017, and now currently sitting at a ranking of 28th in the world. I would love nothing more than to see him make a deep run here.
That will do it for now. Be sure to watch for the full preview once the draws are announced. I’ll have that out this weekend.
