As I wrote about back in March, I had decided to start rating each movie I watch. I started doing it in January of this year, but added in a few I had watched before January 2018 (they were mostly Marvel movies as I rewatched them before Infinity War). With those movies, plus the 84 I’ve watched so far this year, I’m now at an even 100. I figured this would be a good time to jump in for a quick peak at what the list looks like.
I have the ratings sorted two ways: Overall score and divided by genre. For the genres, I kept it simple and gave each movie only one genre. Not a perfect system by any means, but it gives a good enough idea and it kept it simple for comparing similar movies.
Out of the 100 movies I’ve rated:
- 11 have been new 2018 releases
- 29 were movies I rewatched
- The remaining 60 were movies released before this year that I watched for the first time
- Number of movies by genre:
- 38 action
- 3 animated
- 14 comedy
- 8 crime drama
- 29 drama
- 4 sci-fi
- 4 thriller

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect out of this one. I had seen the trailer but didn’t really know too much about it. But it is just a great movie. I think I already need to rewatch it because I’m worried I might be too low on it.
Biggest Surprise (The Bad Kind)
The Circle, Drama, 30/100
My goodness this movie sucked. I wasn’t expecting it to be great by any means, but I was expecting much more than what it was. Emma Watson, Tom Hanks, Patton Oswalt, John Boyega, Karen Gillan. That’s a great cast. The basic story is intriguing enough. And yet the movie still stunk. If I wasn’t such a huge Emma Watson fan, this likely would have been even lower.
What ComesNext
I’ve really enjoyed getting this list going so it’s very simple. Much, much more of the same. I need to mix in some more animated movies for sure. But otherwise, I’ll just keep the list going, watching as many movies as I can. Of the 100 I’ve rated, 84 of them were watched this year. That puts me on pace for about 215 movies for 2018. I’ll up that and aim for 250 by the end of the year. Working through all my personal movies will definitely help get me there.
Now on to that other little bit of news: the new blog series. Before you start jumping up and down with excitement, know that it’s nothing major. The new series will be a companion to Matt’s Movie Monday. That series will continue but will be only for new releases.
This new series is called Matt’s Movie Library (at least for now, we’ll see if I come up with a better name). This will focus on older movies (In this case, “older” means before 2018). There will be no hard and fast rules as to how I’ll decide which movies to write about. It might be random. Or if a sequel, spin-off, reboot, etc is coming out soon, I might look back at the originals that came before it. A good example being the upcoming release of Ocean’s 8. Ocean’s 11 is one of my all-time favorite movies and I love the series as a whole. I’ll probably end up writing about that trilogy ahead of 8‘s release. I might do a theme series. 90’s nostalgia, a collection of specific actor’s movies, something along those lines. Basically whatever I think will be fun to write about.
