Song: Last to Fall
Artist: Starset
Genre: Rock
Starset is becoming a pretty well known rock band, so if you like that genre at all you have probably heard of them. They are very different however from your typical rock band. They still offer very heavy guitars and drums, with the occasional scream in there, but not too much to turn you off to it. But what they are adding is a great use of electronic instruments as well as many others such as strings and brass to add more layers of depth to their sound. For that reason, even if you are a simple minded country music listener you should check them out, and you might find some things you like a lot.
Verses: 9/10
The first part of the verses is kind of a slow ambient sound that intrigues you for what is to come. There are plenty of background noises and things going on to listen close for. Then the build up to the chorus adds some king of electric pad and has the drums pick up substantially to let you know something awesome is about to come.
Chorus: 10/10
This is why I love this genre so much. The chorus is packed full of huge awesomeness. The only problem I have with it, which is a very small one is that it is repetitive with the lyrics, but I like the lyrics anyways. The singer does a great job here with displaying some good emotion. And then the best part is the instruments all working together for a massive sound that mixes the heavy rock with the electronic parts.
Bridge: 9/10
The bridge (the part between the second and last chorus) is short, big, and good. Nothing stands way out here, but it is still quite large. IT is mostly just a good break between the part of the song that really stands out which are the choruses.
Singing: 9/10
I think Dustin Bates is a very good singer for what his band is. He doesn’t have the most powerful voice, but he does a good job singing with the vibe of the band. His parts in the verses are kind of eerie and mysterious, and then he comes in big with lots of emotion when he sings the powerful chorus.
Instruments: 10/10
Starset is so creative with their sound, and they do a great job working together to make all of the many pieces come together and sound good. I lied before, this is why I love this genre. To me, every instrument is just as important as the singer, which is an instrument in themselves. This is why pop and rap music can get so boring to me at times. It is often just a generic beat, with hopefully a good singer. Starset has so much depth in all of their songs. I can listen to one of their songs 10 times and still pick up new sounds I fully didn’t appreciate before. This song has so much going on in all parts of the song if you listen closely. If you are looking for a casual listening experience this is not the band for you. But if you want something more out of your music check them out. Lastly, I can’t not mention the instrumental part at the end. They love putting stuff into their songs like this. They don’t always go with the song, but they are always epic. If you listen to their whole album, it tells a bit of a story, and you can just imagine yourself flying through space when listening to it.
Overall: 9.5/10
I will very rarely give a song a perfect 10 score. That is reserved for only a few songs where I feel nothing could make it better at all. This song is pretty damn close to that though. If you liked this song at all I highly recommend checking out more by Sarset. There album is extremely versatile, with many different styles of songs ranging from very poppy, to electronic, and of course heavy.
