Song: Say Something
Artist: Justin Timberlake
Genre: Pop
Justin Timberlake is always someone I have respected as a musical artist. His style of music is not one that aligns with my own but I can still appreciate his work. He is beloved by many, and for got reason. So people were excited to say the least when he announced his new album, and released his first single. But, his first single, “Filthy,” was pretty terrible to say the least. This led people to have some serious doubts about their beloved Justin and his new album. But fear not, because his new single he just released, “Say Something,” is wonderful. Also, I am aware that Matt just posted about this song, but I was already planning on talking about it and will go deeper into it as a whole, so hope you enjoy!
Verses: 9/10
The first verse starts out with a nice flowing beat and a smooth acoustic guitar. This shows us right away that this is going to be good. Unlike “Filthy” we see that there was a lot of thought into the music that is going into this song. The second verse comes in with the nice mix up of Chris Stapleton singing who does a very nice job. The part where the music stops and there is nice harmony with him and Justin is very nice.
Chorus: 9/10
The chorus keeps the same beat that has been happening but adds some really nice piano to the mix. My only complaint, and it is a small one is that it is a little repetitive. But still, it is cool how Chris and Justin go back and forth with singing in it.
Music: 10/10
There is nothing super complicated going on here, but that’s okay. There are many layers of beats, singing, guitars, piano, brass, and some synth instruments in this song if you listen very carefully. I am just listening to it for the 5th time writing this, and am sure I will pick up more things as I keep listening. There is some serious growth to the song as well, with instruments being added smoothly throughout the song.
Lyrics: 9:10
The lyrics are not overly complicated, but they are nice. I like the one a lot where he says “sometimes the greatest way to say something, is to say nothing at all.” Mary, my wife, who is a very large JT fan told me about this song and knows a lot more than me, and she mentioned that the lyrics were simple because Justin wanted a greater emphasis on the music, and that line is a cool way of pointing that out a little I think. Other artists could learn a thing or two from this song and say more with their music instead of having all of the emphasis always on the singer.
Overall: 9.5/10
I know the average of my scores was lower than 9.5, but I boosted it because the music was so good and that was the most important part of the song. I feel like this is a song that everybody can appreciate no matter what kind of music you like. I am fine if Justin releases weird stuff like “Filthy” as long as he keeps mixing in songs like this. I feel like he just kind of does what he wants and I would be willing to bet his album will be a little of everything which is a good thing.
