Comicbook.com – Maybe the Sony Spider-verse and the MCU aren’t that disconnected after all? Sony’s standalone Venom movie has been said to be completely separate from Tom Holland‘s Spider-Man that appears in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, leaving many comic fans wondering just how you could tell a Venom story without some kind of Spider-Man. Fortunately, it looks like we may not have to find out. Scooper Jon Schnepp appeared on the most recent episode of Collider Movie Talk this week, and informed the hosts that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, which was most recently seen in Spider-Man: Homecoming last July, is set to make an appearance in the Tom Hardy-starring Venom film, which is currently in production.
This is big news, exciting news. Ever since the solo Venom movie was announced, there was speculation about whether or not Spider-Man would make an appearance. But the extent of Spidey’s role is still uncertain.
When Schnepp was asked if the appearance of Spider-Man might be a cameo, he hinted that it might even be more than that.
“Like a cameo, like a who-knows-what-eo,” Schnepp answered. “All I’m sayin’ is Spider-Man, and I’m talkin’ about Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, is gonna be in Venom.”
It’s all but certain it won’t be a full-on, starring role. That would have been made public and production has already started. It would have been impossible to keep that a secret. But there are still numerous possibilities for how Spider-Man can be incorporated into the movie, especially considering very little is known about the plot of the movie. We do know that it will deal with Eddie Brock obtaining his powers; he will become Venom at some point in the movie. The big takeaway there as it relates to Spider-Man’s role is that there will be no history between the two. However, this version of Eddie Brock will be a reporter, so Brock may have had dealings with Spider-Man before the events of the film. It might be a Brock-Spidey interaction rather than Venom-Spidey.
And of course there is always the possibility they are saving Tom Holland’s appearance for a post-credits scene. This would be interesting as post-credit scenes are often used to set up future movies. Would this mean that Tom Hardy’s Venom could be incorporated into the MCU? There have been no indications that there are any plans to do so, but this would be a step in that direction at the very least. According to the deal struck between Sony and Marvel, Sony retains the rights to Spider-Man characters but there is an agreement for some of the characters to appear in Marvel films. As someone who has always been a big Venom fan, I would love to see how Marvel handles this character. But it’s all speculation at this point. We’ll have to wait patiently for more information to come regarding Holland’s role and what it means for any potential future Venom movies.
Venom is scheduled for release on October 5, 2018.
