Weekly Movie News Round-Up

This is a new weekly blog I’m going to try out. As the title suggests, I’ll be covering movie news from the past week. This could include new trailers, new movie announcements, casting rumors, anything that might be noteworthy. It will just be quick snapshots of each story, nothing too in-depth.

Avengers 4 title leaked?

Though it still remains to be seen, I would bet on this one not being true. But given the movie involved, it still bears mentioning. Cinematographer Trent Opaloch, a frequent collaborator with Joe and Anthony Russo, briefly had a full title for the upcoming Avengers movie listed on his official website: Avengers: End Game. Given the events of Infinity War and where Avengers 4 is likely headed, that title would seem to make sense.

But we have long since learned how Marvel operates when they want to keep something secret. And Opaloch already worked on Infinity War so he knows the game by now. It would be extremely sloppy for him to accidentally put something so important out there for everyone to see. But only time will tell on this one. It should be noted that his website has since been updated, and the movie now reads simply as Avengers 4.

Fast and the Furious spin-off may have found its villain

Idris Elba is in final talks to play the villain in Hobbs and Shaw, the Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham spin-off of the blockbuster series. Not much is known about the movie yet. But with three big-time stars coming together for a movie in the Furious universe, you can bet big things are coming.

Keri Russell Reportedly in talks to join Star Wars: Episode IX

Another big casting announcement, if true. Keri Russell, who recently ended her epic six season run on FX’s The Americans, will be taking on a lead role, though few specifics are known. We know the role will be action-heavy, which is something we know she can handle. But we don’t even know whose side she will be fighting on. With production scheduled to start at the end of the month, we’ll see if more information is made available in the coming weeks.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom reaches box office milestone

The mixed reviews can’t stop the fifth entry in the Jurassic Park series. It has officially crossed the $1 billion mark in the world wide box office. As of this writing, Fallen Kingdom sits as the 3rd highest grossing movie of the year — behind Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther — and is the 34th highest grossing movie of all time. A currently untitled sequel is scheduled for release on June 11, 2021 and is sure to be another box office behemoth.

Tom Cruise has found his new wing man

Variety reports that Miles Teller has signed on to the Top Gun sequel, playing Goose’s son. At first blush I like this decision. One, I’m a big Miles Teller fan in general, so I’m always excited to see him in new movies. But there’s just something about him that makes him feel like a good fit for this kind of role. I think you need someone with a bit of arrogance, and we all know Teller can pull that off no problem. I’m looking forward to seeing the first footage, which will hopefully be a step in confirming this as the correct decision. Top Gun: Maverick is set for release on July 12, 2019

Let’s finish with a couple trailers

Juliet, Naked

Eh. On the plus side, it stars Rose Byrne, Chris O’Dowd, and Ethan Hawke, so it’s at least off to a good start. But it would take a lot to get me legitimately excited about a new romantic comedy. If it can be somewhere close to the level of No Strings Attached, I’ll be happy. Anything better would just be a pleasant surprise.

Breaking and Exiting

This movie looks ridiculous, and I can’t decide if that’s in a good or bad way yet. If nothing else, you’ve got to give them credit for at least giving us an original idea. In this day and age, with sequels, spin-offs, and reboots dominating Hollywood, it’s refreshing to see a novel concept for a change.
