Weekly Movie News Round-Up

Fan favorite to return for Star Wars Episode IX

A report from the Hollywood Reporter confirms Billy Dee Williams will be in Star Wars Episode IX, reprising his role as Lando Calrissian. No word yet on how big his role will be, but with production set to begin later this summer, we might learn more once filming gets under way.

Joker origin movie confirmed; to star Joaquin Phoenix

Joaquin Phoenix is set to  star in a Joker origins movie. This is particularly interesting considering Jared Leto stars as the Joker in the DC Extended Universe, and has his own Joker standalone film in development. I suppose Warner Bros. could try to tie this Phoenix-led movie into the DCEU, but my bet is it will be separate and independent from the interconnected DC films. Neither a title nor release date has been announced.

Black Widow solo movie has found its director

Australian director Cate Shortland has been tapped to helm the Black Widow solo movie starring Scarlett Johansson. There’s no word yet on when we can expect to see this movie hit theaters. But now that the director has been found, hopefully the rest of the details will start to fall into place.

New trailers

Life Itself

I rarely ever cry during movies, but Life Itself looks just might be able to make it happen. And I’m not mad about it. This has a great cast legitimately looks like it could be a really good movie.

Extinction

I’m never quite sure how to feel about Netflix movies. No matter the cast or how good the trailer is, they still tend to be very hit or miss for me. But it looks intriguing enough, and if nothing else at least it has Michael Peña and Lizzy Caplan.

Colette

A biographical film, Colette tells the life story of the French novelist of the same name. She marries a well-known author and begins to write books of her own – except that they are published under his name. When the books turn out to be hugely popular, Colette struggles with the lack of recognition for her work. Seems pretty interesting, and I’m usually a fan of Keira Knightley’s work.

Mary Queen of Scots

Not the type of movie I would usually get excited about. But what does get me excited is Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan headlining the movie. That fact alone will be enough to get me to see this one.

Little Italy

The children of feuding pizza restaurant owners fall in love. If that sounds dumb to you, it’s because it is. Even still, it feels like this one might have some of that “so bad it’s good” vibe to it.

The Package

A group of friends go camping and something goes terribly wrong. The trailer doesn’t explicitly reveal what happens, but it hints very strongly at a kid accidentally cutting of his own penis. Hopefully that’s not the central plot, but you never know. It looks like a perfect Netflix original movie. And it stars Geraldine Viswanathan from Blockers. She was fantastic in that role so there’s at least some potential for this movie if she can give another performance like that one.
